Britney Spears: A Look Back At Her Singles … So Far
With her new album due in March, we revisit some of the pop princess’ many hits.
By Jocelyn Vena
Now that Britney Spears has announced that she will be releasing a new album in March 2011, fans must be wondering what her latest musical endeavor will sound like. The as-yet-untitled effort is a follow-up to 2008′s well-received Circus, which helped resurrect the singer’s career after a dark time in her life. No information regarding the upcoming album has emerged, but Britney’s faithful followers have watched her change up her look and sound with each single over the span of her decade-plus career, as she evolved from a bubblegum-pop princess to a sexy dance-club siren. Let’s trace Spears’ musical journey by taking a look at some of her most memorable tunes.
In 1999, a fresh-faced Spears released ” …Baby One More Time” (produced by Max Martin), the title track off her massive debut album. She got the conversation about her sexuality started thanks to a provocative video in which she danced around in a Catholic school uniform, as well as the song’s equally provocative lyrics, where she longingly sang, “My loneliness is killing me/ I must confess, I still believe/ When I’m not with you I lose my mind/ Give me a sign/ Hit me baby one more time.” It’s to be noted that the song originally was intended for TLC.
In the video for “Oops! … I Did It Again” (produced by Martin and Rami Yacoub), Spears’ smash from the 2000 album of the same name, the pigtails and skirt were gone, replaced by a red catsuit. That visual, as well as the song’s lyrical content, reflected Spears’ evolution from naughty schoolgirl to intergalactic sex kitten, both in her video and on the song’s lyrical content.
For “I’m a Slave 4 U” (produced by the Neptunes) off 2001′s Britney, Spears declared her sexual independence. No longer was she just teasing about the idea that she loved the beat of dance music and how sexy it made her feel, instead she was explicitly sharing it with the world. Plus, who could forget all the sweat in that video.
In 2003, Spears teamed up with the Queen of Pop, Madonna, for “Me Against the Music” (produced by Christopher Stewart and Penelope Magnet), the sexy lead single from In the Zone. While the darker, more synth-heavy “Toxic” would become the album’s defining tune, “Me Against the Music” picked up where “Slave” left off: Spears battling the demon she has inside of her that just loves to come out on the dance floor.
After a few years of not putting out any music, Spears hit the club again with 2007′s “Gimme More” (produced by Danja) off the aptly titled Blackout. Between the release of In the Zone and Blackout, Spears had married, divorced and become a mother — she also had started to act erratically. The track, which relied more heavily on underground dance and electro than most of Spears’ previous singles, was a highly sexualized tune about getting it on.
After the darkness of Blackout, Spears got back to her fun and frolicking old ways on the 2008 Circus single “Womanizer” (produced by the Outsyders). The track was a return to form for Spears after the lackluster response to Blackout, and it brought the discussion back around to her music and away from her sometimes topsy-turvy personal life. In the song’s video, Spears gets back at a player, and really has the last laugh. The clip also features ffotage of a completely nude Britney in a steamy sauna.
In 2009, Spears shot to the top of the charts with the danceable track “Three” (produced by Martin and Shellback) off The Singles Collection. The tune was an instant smash, and featured Spears robotically singing about a ménage à trois over a club beat.
As for what’s next for the singer, very little is known about her forthcoming album, although a couple of her producers have dropped some hints. Dr. Luke said that the music will “be a departure from what you’ve heard,” while Danja called it “hard-hitting, uptempo [and] high-energy.” Spears, meanwhile, is very clear about how she thinks the record is sounding. “I AM IN L-O-V-E WITH IT!” she tweeted.

Trap the Tiger is a cute, checkers-like Time Waster for all ages
When I was a kid, I used to love playing checkers; figuring out your opponent’s next move, trying to trap their pieces and guessing what they’d do next. Trap the Tiger is a cute time-waster that captures some of that magic while being simple enough for kids to get and for grown-ups to enjoy (well, I liked it, at least).
The game starts off with a tiger at the center of the board, and a seemingly random arrangement of dark and light circles (the exact color scheme changes every level). When you click a circle, it becomes dark, and the tiger gets one move. The tiger can only move over light circles, one circle at a time. It tries to inch its way to the edge of the board, and eventually escape. If it manages to exit the board, you lose and the tiger wins.
It starts off quite easy, but quickly becomes complex. It doesn’t have many bells and whistles, and I mean that in the most literal sense; the game is devoid of any sound effects. But if you (or your kid) is up for a few minutes of thought, you should definitely give Trap the Tiger a spin.

Ke$ha’s Cannibal: A Cheat Sheet
Singer has already scored a hit with new single ‘We R Who We R.’
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ Getty Images
It’s been a pretty phenomenal year for Ke$ha. The brash, glitter-loving club kid burst onto the scene in January with her debut album, Animal, hot on the heels of the smash debut single “Tik Tok.”
In short order, she ended the chart run of Susan Boyle when Animal debuted at #1, made her first trip to the Grammy Awards, teamed up with pals 3OH!3 for another hit video with “Blah Blah Blah,” dropped in on “American Idol” and hit the road with Rihanna. And that’s just the first three months of the year!
But after scoring another hit with “Your Love Is My Drug” and flipping the bird to haters over their critiques of her wobbly debut on “Saturday Night Live,” Ke$ha unleashed another single, “Take It Off.”
For a minute, there was talk of a follow-up album that might have a country twang, not out of the question considering that she’s a Nashville native and her mom penned songs for Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. But as she said at the time, “I’m also really digging being called, like, half-jokingly, a white-girl rapper. I think it’s really funny, and I’m going to ride that train for a little bit.”
By August, she was already plotting her next move, telling MTV News, “I’m always writing and kind of thinking of the next step. I’m still executing this record properly onstage, but the next record is definitely on my mind, and potentially in the works soon.” She described waking up in Tokyo at 4 in the morning with a brainstorm for a new song and then spending seven hours making a “horrible” beat on “Garage Band” and singing and rapping into her computer.
A short time later, it was announced that her nine-song follow-up, Cannibal, would hit stores November 22 as a “companion” album to a reissue of Animal. The disc was reported to contain eight new songs produced by heavy-hitters like Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Bangladesh and to be preceded by “We R Who We R.”
“This year has been carnivorous and life-changing. I have my rowdy, gorgeous fans to thank for taking me on the ride of a lifetime,” Ke$ha said in a statement. “My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing. The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgment and be themselves unapologetically. It’s the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don’t like it — bite me.”
Though a rumored hookup with Drake was false, a confirmed track list proved to have plenty of profane and silly titles, including (ahem) “C U Next Tuesday,” “Sleazy,” “Blow,” “The Harold Song,” “Cannibal,” “We R,” “Crazy Beautiful Life” and “Grow a Pear,” plus a remix of “Animal.” After winning an MTV EMA for Best New Act, the singer also locked in her first headlining affair, the Get $leazy Tour, which is slated to kick off February 15 in Portland, Oregon.
Like most major new albums, Cannibal leaked online a week before it hit shelves, perhaps the finest proof yet that Ke$ha has truly hit the big time. Only this time, after most of the songs had hit the Web, Ke$ha just posted the damn thing herself on her website and told her fans to enjoy.
“This is my album premiere, and it’s top secret, and it’s really fun and it’s wild,” Ke$ha said in a message posted on her site. “Things are going to get crazy and a little awkward, it’ll be okay. Listen to it.”
She’s going to have plenty of major competition on the charts this week with new releases from Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and My Chemical Romance, but something tells us Ke$ha isn’t that worried.
Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Lindsay Lohan Inspires New Comedy ‘Dogs In Pocketbooks’
Screenwriter Charles Casillo has hired heiress Lydia Hearst Shaw to star as a ‘bratty movie goddess … in trouble with the law.’

Lindsay Lohan’s troubled life and recent scandals don’t necessarily seem particularly funny, but screenwriter Charles Casillo apparently is aiming to put a comedic spin on the actress’s trials in the new film “Dogs in Pocketbooks.” The New York Post reports that Casillo has chosen heiress Lydia Hearst Shaw, in her first Hollywood film role, to play the Lohan-esque character at the center of his movie.
The writer told the Post that Shaw will portray a “bratty movie goddess in and out of rehab, in trouble with the law, and hounded by greedy agents, predatory paparazzi, off-the-wall stalkers and crazed media.” TMZ pointed out that the only Lohan-related aspect missing from this picture are “scheming, sponging parents whose lives derail their child,” although that might take away from some of the flick’s comedic value. The film is set to start shooting in New York and Los Angeles in February.
Casillo emphasized to the Post that “Dogs in Pocketbooks” is “in no way mean-spirited toward Lindsay,” adding, “It’s the kind of thing she has spoofed about herself in the past. It’s more of a satire about the crazy people around her and the situations they generate. It satirizes the obsession with modern celebrity.”
Though Shaw has not acted in a feature film before, she is well known for her modeling career — including campaigns for Bottega Veneta, Escada and Lord & Taylor — and dating Jeff Goldblum. She also is the daughter of famous 1970s kidnapping victim Patty Hearst. Casillo said he spent a lot of time trying to find the right woman to play the big-screen version of Lohan, and that Shaw is perfect for the part.
“She’s one of the few supermodels who can actually act,” he insisted. “She’s smart, well-read, charming and very beautiful. We looked at a lot of actresses for this role, and I was really knocked out.” The fact that she knows what it’s like to be a pursued celebrity probably only helped as well, considering she is the heir to the William Randolph Hearst fortune.
The film also has already cast “Dynasty” actress Joan Collins as the main character’s agent. The veteran star told the Post, “The script is a hoot — a satire on the crazed hysteria surrounding show-biz celebrities. I’m playing an aggressive, sexy, powerful woman. For a change.”
This month, Lohan has been involved in a scandal where a woman who worked at the rehab facility at which the actress was staying accused her of assault, though charges have now been dropped. She also was recently replaced by Malin Akerman as the star of the Linda Lovelace biopic “Inferno” because Lohan was not going to be out of rehab in time to shoot the movie.

Bellator signs deal with MTV2 for fourth season and beyond
Bellator has signed a three-year deal with MTV2 to air the promotions’ fights live, starting with the fourth season in March 2011. The tournament-based promotion, with champions like Ben Askren, will air on MTV2, a station once known for music programming but has grown to air sports-ish programming like "Bully Beatdown," a show hosted by Strikeforce’s Jason "Mayhem" Miller, and "Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory," which follows professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek.
From the Bellator press release:
MTV2, which features the highest concentration of M12-24 and M12-34 in television, will telecast two of these LIVE tournaments per year, plus a collection of special feature events. The first tournament will premiere in March 2011.
"MTV2 is the perfect home for the intense mixed martial arts action of Bellator," Eric Conte, SVP, Programming and Production, MTV2. "MMA is at the top of our audience’s wish list, and partnering with Bellator to bring live events and specials to MTV2 made complete sense since our viewers are so hungry to see more MMA on-air."
The key word in that is live. Bellator was with Fox Sports Net for their last two seasons, and they were often pre-empted by other local programming. In Chicago, Bellator’s hometown, the fights rarely aired live, and sometimes were started after midnight. By the time the fights aired, the results were widely known.
Bellator recognized that and made a change. They also appear to be going after a younger demographic, as most MMA promotions covet the 18-49 year-old male demographic.

Phillip Island WSBK Test Day 2: Biaggi Fastest Again
The weather finally turned halfway decent for a test, with the sun out and temperatures rising for the World Superbike test at Phillip Island in Australia. The improved conditions saw Max Biaggi once again top the – admittedly very limited – timesheets with a lap of 1’32.3, but 2010 World Superbike champion – out on an Aprilia bearing the #1 plate – was only a couple of tenths faster than both Yamaha’s Eugene Laverty and Biaggi’s Aprilia teammate Leon Camier. Slowest man of the day was Laverty’s teammate Marco Melandri, but even Melandri was just three tenths off Biaggi’s fastest .
Biaggi and Camier spent the day testing the 2011 Ohlins forks once again, as well as a new swingarm, fuel tank and engine update, aimed at smoothing power delivery. The pair also tested new Pirellis, though whether those tires will be ready for the season opener on February 27th remains to be seen.
The day was spoiled by a couple of crashes, both happily ending without serious injury. Marco Melandri crashed and hurt a finger, though that did not slow him down, while Leon Camier came away from his crash unhurt, only to suffer a bird strike, the Englishman hitting one of Phillip Island’s ubiquitous seagulls at high speed. That incident was painful enough for Camier to call an early halt to the test, after Camier suffered swelling in his arm

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps

Coldplay’s new British stamps
Photo: Royal Mail
On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.’s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.
The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones‘ Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin‘s IV, David Bowie‘s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield‘s Tubular Bells, The Clash‘s London Calling, New Order‘s Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream‘s Screamadelica, Pink Floyd‘s The Division Bell, Blur‘s Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay‘s A Rush of Blood to the Head.
Meant to honor “the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people’s lives,” the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album’s iconic imagery.
“Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him,” he said. “That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time.”
Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan “a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today’s issue date.”
“We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps,” the message read. “Very nice they are too.”
