We don’t necessarily mean the latest craze; we’d like to hear about apps that have stood the test of time on your device, apps that are among the first you install on a new smartphones, apps that have earned their place on your home screen and in your heart.

So, what are some of these apps? Bonus points for links to screenshots in the comments!

mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

In her ‘Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale’ special, she calls the ‘OMG’ singer ‘really hot right now.’
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

What do Britney Spears and Usher have in common? Well, they are both global superstars with a back catalogue of tunes that have kept fans dancing for a really long time and they both recently hooked up with will.i.am for tracks on their latest releases (the Black Eyed Peas mastermind worked on the pop vixen’s Femme Fatale tune “Big Fat Bass”). And, if Spears has her way, she and the “OMG” singer could be hitting the road together.

When Spears sat down to talk with Sway Calloway for her “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” special — airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV — the singer revealed that Usher is first on her list of artists she’d like to join her on tour.

“Oh, I’m so excited. I’m really excited about going on tour, very,” she explained about her forthcoming summer trek, which happens to have a spot open on the bill now that Enrique Iglesias has pulled out of the gig. “I think Usher’s really great right now. I think he’s really hot right now. That would be cool [to tour with him].”

The North American road trip is expected to kick off June 17 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates, winding up on August 13 in Toronto. More details will be announced soon.

The “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” special is a mixture of behind-the-scenes footage of the singer as she wraps up production on her album, which dropped this week, as well as an inside look at her life and fans. In addition, those who couldn’t make Spears’ recent nightclub show in Las Vegas will get to see her as she takes the stage in her latest pop incarnation.

Don’t miss “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale,” airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

‘Me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.,’ Ke$ha tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

It’s prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories.

“I had a great prom,” Ne-Yo told MTV News. “I didn’t get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good.”

Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. “I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends,” she recalled. “Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.”

“Hellcats” star Aly Michalka doesn’t have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. “I was homeschooled, so I don’t even think we had a fake prom,” she lamented. “Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn’t invited?”

While everything always seems to be in peril on “The Vampire Diaries,” star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: “Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember].”

Romeo went big for his prom. “My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond,” he said. “And it was one of the best nights of my life.”

“My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as ‘Dumb & Dumber,’ ” Audrina Patridge laughed. “And so we were like, ‘We can’t dress up dorky … we have to look good.’ ”

Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: “June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night.”

Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. “I had a great prom. I had an awesome time,” he said. “I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot. She wore a really hot red dress, so I felt like I had arm candy.”

Brad Tavares caught some bad breaks during Season 11 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” but his luck is turning.

In his first “name” UFC fight, he got Phil Baroni, who was on his last legs. Tavares blasted out Baroni in the first round and got premium exposure on ION. Then less than a month ago, the promotion called him with an opportunity to fight another middleweight veteran in Aaron Simpson. Simpson’s original opponent, Jason Miller was moved into a coaching on TUF and the 23-year-old Tavares jumped at the opportunity to replace him at UFC 132.

“I know that he possesses that real high pedigree in wrestling,” Tavares said of Simpson, who first wrestled for Arizona State and then served as a coach for the Wildcats. “He trains with [Ryan] Bader and [C.B.] Dolloway, and all those other really good wrestlers. So that’s something been working, takedown defense and sweeps, and getting back up, and keeping it on the feet.”

Tavares’ confidence is sky high. He made the decision a few years ago to leave his native Hawaii to train in Las Vegas, first with Shawn Tompkins and now with Xtreme Couture, where he works his striking with Ray Sefo and wrestling with Neil Melanson. He also drives a short way to work his jiu-jitsu game with Robert Drysdale.

“Hawaii’s expensive. Everybody can’t train twice a day, three times a day like you can out here,” Tavares told RawVegas.tv while speaking in the bowels of Las Vegas’ MGM Grand. “[Back in Hawaii] they need to work a full-time job and then after that they need to find the time to train.”

When fighters do they train in Hawaii, they just can’t find the same level of coaching and training partners present in a place like Las Vegas.

Tavares (7-0, 2-0 UFC) was going tit for tat with Court McGee during the TUF 11 semifinals when he was rocked and finished in the final 20 seconds of the fight. McGee went on to win the TUF 11 Finale and that six-figure contract. The Hawaiian would love a rematch with McGee, but first comes the 36-year-old Simpson (8-2, 4-2 UFC). The older Simpson is a minus-250 favorite.

Chris Marrs Piliero explains the video’s ‘Half Baked’ and ‘Terminator’ homages, but what about those elusive seashells?
By Kara Warner

Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” music video
Photo: Jive

Britney Spearsvideo for “I Wanna Go” — a dream-sequence-y, pop-culture-reference-packed tongue-in-cheek attack on the paparazzi — is so fun, it’s quickly becoming one of our favorites. And because we can’t get enough of it, MTV News sought out the vid’s creative mastermind, director Chris Marrs Piliero (who also directed Ke$ha’s “Blow”), to explain it to us, frame by frame.

“This opening scene poked fun at the ridiculous rumors that surround Britney,” Piliero said of the clip’s opening press conference, during which Britney tells off a room of reporters. “That is our homage to ‘Half Baked.’ I was really stoked that we were able to include that little parody homage in the video and that Guillermo Diaz, who is the guy [in the scene] giving the thumbs up, is from the movie.”

After strutting out of the press conference and squeezing the butt of an autograph-seeking fan (played by one of her dancers), Spears strolls down the street, passing by a baby in a stroller who whistles at her.

“We were actually going to have three babies,” Piliero revealed. “But the other two were just crying and crying. and I was like, ‘F— it, get ‘em outta there.’ And the one baby, he ruled and was supercute, so we went with him.”

Spears’ next saucy move is to flash a bunch of guys on the street: a young boy, his dad, a male driver getting a ticket and the cop writing it.

“That little kid was awesome,” Piliero said of the young redheaded boy. “If you look closely, he’s actually squeezing his juice box all over this shirt. The cop is another one of Britney’s dancers. You might recognize him from the ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, he had blue hair.”

Next up, Spears encounters a paparazzo on the street and grabs his camera and throws it to the ground.

“That was a very genuine performance from Britney,” Piliero said of the scene. “I felt like she was letting out her inner emotion toward paparazzi. It was also really cold. I think she just went for it.”

Cut to Spears on top of a taxi, microphone in hand with a long cord, which she uses to take out the various photographers who have surrounded her.

“A lot of people think this was inspired by ‘Kill Bill,’ because I’m a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. I would totally own up to that if it was true,” he admitted. “But I actually intended for her to always having her performance with the microphone [throughout the video] for her performance setup, so I thought that was a good way to tie it all together and I didn’t want to give her a real weapon.”

But Piliero was making an intentional pop-culture reference with the wording on the movie theater marquee in the background of the scene that reads “Crossroads 2: Cross Harder.” “I’ve always thought that ‘Die Hard 2: Die Harder’ is one of the most ridiculously awesome titles for a sequel,” he said. “And I needed to put something in the marquee, and I thought it would be a really fun Easter egg for fans.”

Now something odd happens with the paparazzi who’ve been hit by Spears’ microphone weapon — they are revealed to be robots or androids. “I love pop culture and this whole video is kind of a dream sequence,” Piliero said. “I think it’s natural to have fantasies and dreams with stuff inspired by pop culture, so that’s why the robot guys kind of have a ‘Terminator’-ish feel.”

Before the “Terminator” ‘bots can move in on Spears, Diaz drives up in a sports car and whisks her away, where he celebrates by pouring a carton of milk all over himself.

“Guillermo kills it in the scene with the milk, he’s hilarious,” Piliero enthused. “And I love Britney’s reaction there; both her reactions where she’s laughing are so good. A lot of people ask about the milk and what the deal with it is, a lot of people have theories too. I don’t need to say what the point is, because I love hearing what people say, so I’ll leave it at that. Same goes with the seashells too.”

Cut to the final scene, where we realize that it was all a dream. Spears is at the press conference, shaken out of a daze when Guillermo steps in and tells the reporters, “No more questions,” then hands Spears a handful of those seashells that Piliero won’t explain. He looks back at the camera at the last moment and we see his eyes are robot red, an obvious nod to Michael Jackson’s zombie-green eyes in the last shot of “Thriller.”

” ‘Thriller’ is one of my favorite music videos ever,” Piliero said. “I remember watching it when I was 5, that was what inspired me to become a music video director so I wanted to pay homage to it.”

What do you think the milk and the seashells signify in “I Wanna Go”? Share your theories in the comments below.

Konstruct generative augmented reality art for iOS

If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren’t blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you’d like to create your AR sculpture — it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn’t matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you’re done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your ‘brush’ — but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app’s internal workings, it’s hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is — and judging by the developer’s affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn’t perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice — and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: “The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future.”

Griffin, Vazquez winners in final prelims at UFC on Versus 4

PITTSBURGH — Joe Stevenson lost in a unanimous decision over Javier Vazquez on Sunday night, with the judges seeing it 30-27, 29-28, 30-27.

Early in the first round, Vazquez ducked under a Stevenson punch to get a takedown, but Stevenson used it to grab his arm and pull it into an arm bar. Stevenson couldn’t finish it, and Vazquez took over top position. After neither fighter was able to do much on the ground, they were stood up. Again, Vazquez took the fight to the ground, and again, not much was accomplished there.

Stevenson appeared in trouble in the second round when Vazquez jumped on for the guillotine. He could not finish, and the fight returned to stand-up. Stevenson looked sluggish for much of the bout. Vazquez never really took control, but managed to take advantage of Stevenson’s lethargy by landing several straight shots.

For Stevenson, this was his fourth loss in a row, but his first fight at featherweight. He hasn’t won a bout since 2009, and the wear of a career with 45 bouts appeared to show.

Griffin takes tight decision over Gamburyan

Tyson Griffin took the final decision of the UFC on Versus 4 undercard over Manny Gamburyan, 29-28, 29-28, 29-29.

Gamburyan started strong with a takedown early, and then used that to transition into a standing guillotine. When he couldn’t finish that, he tossed Griffin to the ground, and took his back as Griffin stood up. Gamburyan then moved off his back, and finished the round clinching against the fence.

The two got into several violent tangles in the second round, exchanging several big strikes. In one of those dust-ups, Stevenson threw an inadvertent shot to Gamburyan’s crotch, pausing the fight for a moment as Stevenson recovered. It happened again near the end of the round, and this time, Griffin seemed upset by the stoppage.

Griffin knocked Gamburyan down early in the third, but Gamburyan quickly returned to his feet. Gamburyan threw Griffin, but couldn’t maintain control. Griffin ducked behind and landed several big strikes before Gamburyan maneuvered out. Griffin also used low leg kicks to tenderize Gamburyan’s leg throughout the bout, giving him an edge in the bout.

This was Griffin’s first bout at featherweight after spending years as a lightweight. He seemed well suited to the move down, staying strong throughout the three rounds.

We break down the first sneak peek of Tom Cruise’s fourth ‘Mission.’
By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler

Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol”
Photo: Paramount

The first “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” trailer begins in classic fashion for this epic spy franchise: with a ridiculously destructive explosion. It’s been almost six years, after all, since the previous installment hit theaters, and so this new footage, which popped up online Tuesday evening, delivers the fiery goods early and often.

Hit play on the embedded video as we walk through some of the key moments in the trailer, then read on for a deeper exploration of what’s going on in the “Ghost Protocol” footage.

The J.J. Abrams Conspiracy
Early on, as Tom Wilkinson explains the unachievable mission Tom Cruise and his team will confront, we see Wilkinson flip through a series of digital profiles of the IMF agents. Josh Holloway’s character, it seems, is “disavowed.”

Now if you’re a fan of the franchise, you’ll remember that in the third film, Keri Russell (a veteran of producer J.J. Abrams’ “Felicity”) is killed surprisingly early in the action. Our working theory is that we’re in for a similar treat for Holloway, who starred in Abrams’ “Lost.” We don’t see a lot of him in the rest of the trailer, and when you do see him, he’s usually alone. All signs point to Holloway getting an unfortunate, and quite possibly bloody, exit in “Ghost Protocol.”

The Brad Bird Comparison
Midway through the trailer, we get a moment that clearly harkens back to the first “M:I” movie. As Jeremy Renner flies down into a silo-like structure and the camera follows him from above, we can’t help but think of the moment in the original film in which Cruise, secured via harness, swooped down into a secure CIA facility.

While J.J. Abrams has told us “Ghost Protocol” will carry the unmistakable signature of director Brad Bird, who is making his live-action debut after animated fare like “The Incredibles,” it’s hard to see any Birdian touches here. This looks like a “Mission” movie, not a Brad Bird one. And we wonder if, in the finished film, that will still be the case. One of Bird’s signature stylistic traits is action (and interactions) infused with humor, and “M:I” is hardly a franchise that goes for laughs.

The Tom Cruise Marathon
It would not be a Tom Cruise movie, let alone a “Mission” movie, without a shot of the action star running like the wind. There’s a hilarious YouTube video about this, which is definitely worth watching. But all jokes aside, let’s give Cruise some serious credit: We tend to take him for granted, but the guy is almost 50 years old, and here he’s running, jumping, diving and nearly dying. That’s impressive stuff.

The Jeremy Renner Possibility
Renner, of “Hurt Locker” fame, is a new face in the franchise; last year, he told MTV News he was being groomed to take over the franchise from Cruise. But that’s not at all the sense we get from the trailer, especially when Cruise suggests Renner is hiding something. First off, Renner is reportedly the front-runner to take over the “Bourne” franchise from Matt Damon, and it’d be odd to have the guy be the face of two separate spy series. And second, based on some of the dialogue in the trailer, there just might be a twist with Renner’s character in “Ghost Protocol.” Is he a villain? Is the trailer just trying to throw us for a loop? Can we possibly have a “Mission” movie in the future that doesn’t feature Cruise himself?

The IMAX Grandeur
The trailer wraps up with an epic scene in which Tom Cruise scales the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai, the tallest building in the world. This scene is compelling for two reasons. One, it was shot with IMAX cameras, and for all the technical mumbo-jumbo you can get into when talking about this technology, the fact is that watching something shot in IMAX delivers a singularly breathtaking visual scope. “Ghost Protocol” will be worth seeing in an IMAX theater just for this scene. And second, Cruise clearly stole the gloves he wore in “Minority Report” to scale this building, “Spider-Man”-style. Hey, can you blame a guy for trying to sneak a swarm of blockbusters into one film?

Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.”
